French Red Cross on Wheels: a unique partnership

The French Red Cross and the PSA Foundation joined forces back in 2012 to tackle isolation among society’s most vulnerable people.

The two organisations renewed their partnership for a further three years in 2015 with a new joint initiative, known as “French Red Cross on Wheels”, funded by the Foundation.

Recognising that mobility is one of the driving factors behind isolation, the French Red Cross decided to take its services directly to the people who need them most.

The Foundation funded 18 new mobile units, each comprising a Peugeot Boxer van specially fitted out to carry food and accommodate members of the public inside.

French Red Cross volunteers take the vans out onto the roads across France to meet vulnerable people and bring them much-needed social contact, handing out food, offering counselling, and distributing clothing and hygiene products.

By supporting the French Red Cross on Wheels project, the PSA Foundation aims to help vulnerable and isolated people get the social support they need. The project also chimes with the French Red Cross’ own strategy to come up with new ways to help people regain their independence, diversify its provision to target specific individual needs, and extend the reach of its vital support services across France.

The French Red Cross on Wheels programme is founded on four core values:

  • community,
  • trust,
  • adaptability,
  • good citizenship.

More than 200,000 km covered on rural roads since 2012

Since 2012, the French Red Cross on Wheels initiative has helped more than 40,000 people throughout France. At the end of 2016, there were 42 vehicles travelling across the country, and volunteers had covered more than 200,000 km on rural roads.

In 2016, the three newest vehicles (in the Landes, Gironde and Isère departments) brought all-important help to 14,400 people.

Three new vehicles will take to the roads in 2017, in Bayeux, Doubs and Jura.

A further five will commence operations in 2018 (including Rennes, the Nord department and Martinique)
